2 Do Now Think about a movie.
Why is it frustrating when a movie goes from one scene to the next without explanation?

3 Why are transitions important?
Transitions are how writers connect ideas so that they flow from one to the next. They make your writing easier to read, and your ideas easier to understand.

4 Types of transitions: Transitions that give examples or explain a statement: Like Namely Particularly Specifically Such as For example As an illustration For instance expressly Including In particular

5 Types of transitions: Transitions that highlight or emphasize an idea:
Keep in mind Moreover Most importantly Notably Obviously Above all Particularly Certainly primarily Especially In particular

6 Types of transitions: Transitions that connect or link ideas:
As an example Also Furthermore In addition For example For instance

7 Types of transitions: Transitions that end ideas: Finally
In conclusion Therefore As such Thus To sum up

8 Practice Where can we put transitions in the following paragraph?
Both Obama and Jeter use figurative language to explain their experiences. Obama describes a nasty episode with his father as "though something cracked open between us, goblins rushing out of some sealed-off lair." Jeter describes himself at 14 as "I was 14 years old and looked 12 because of the twigs I had for arms and legs." Both authors use figurative language to describe uncomfortable or challenging situations.

9 Activity Review your rough draft.
Make sure to include transitions where they are needed. Finish the peer conference checklist when you are done.
