1 Using Word templates © EIT, Author Gay Robertson, 2017

2 Why use templates? Word templates are saved as .dotx (no macros on the template) or .dotm files (macros allowed on the template) They contain default settings for font styles, paragraph styles, margins etc. They can also contain default text. Most companies set up templates for correspondence, memos, faxes, reports etc. Templates ensure that all documents are consistent as Styles are applied from the template.

3 How do I use a Word template?
Don’t do this through Word Open Navigate to your folder and double click on the template file a new document will open and the title will be “Document# - Word” the new document will be a copy of the template with any special styles, formatting, building blocks, text etc that you included when creating the template

4 How do I save a document as a template?
Go to tab, Choose Click on Change file type Navigate to correct location to save Key filename, Click on Check the title bar is showing correct file type Close the template

5 How do I edit my template?
Go to tab, Choose Click on Navigate to template location Click on template to edit Enter Check the title bar is showing that you have opened the template Make changes to the template, click on Close the template.

6 End show Esc to exit
