3 What are E-Cigarettes and Vapes?
E-cigarettes come in many shapes and sizes. Most have a battery, a heating element, and a place to hold a liquid. E-cigarettes produce an aerosol by heating a liquid that usually contains nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals that help to make the aerosol. Users inhale this aerosol into their lungs. Bystanders can also breathe in this aerosol when the user exhales into the air. E-cigarettes are known by many different names. They are sometimes called “e-cigs,” “e-hookahs,” “mods,” “vape pens,” “vapes,” and “Juuls” Some e-cigarettes are made to look like regular cigarettes, cigars, or pipes. Some resemble pens, USB sticks, and other everyday items. Larger devices such as tank systems, or “mods,” do not resemble other tobacco products. Using an e-cigarette is sometimes called “vaping” and using a Juul is known as “juuling” E-cigarettes can be used to deliver marijuana and other drugs.

4 Breaking Down the Facts: E-Cigarettes
Usually contains NICOTINE (stimulant, highly addictive, causes changes in brain chemistry, found in tobacco products) Changes in brain – dopamine increases - providing the user with a temporary feeling of pleasure – BRAIN CAN DEVELOP A STRONG DEPENDENCE Nicotine can also make your heart beat faster, because it can activate your “fight or flight response” Nicotine can independently cause trouble breathing and damage to your lungs, outside of all the chemicals and toxins in cigarettes Nicotine can even negatively impact your reproductive organs Popcorn Lung (irreversible lung condition caused by diacetyl, a chemical used in microwavable popcorn and found in e-juice)

5 Breaking Down the Facts: Juuls
Always contain nicotine The amount of nicotine in one Juul pod is equivalent to the amount of nicotine in 20 cigarettes Cost: the Starter Kit ($49.99) includes: rechargeable Juul device, USB charging dock and four Juul pods Popularity of Juul has significantly increased due to: Easy to hide because it looks like a flash drive Can be charged in a USB port Does not produce a strong odor Easy access through online retailers, local vape shops and peers Variety of fruity flavors which appeal to a younger audience

8 Targeting Teens

9 Harmful Effects The process of heating the e-Juice produces aldehyde, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde and acrolein which are carcinogens (cancer causing chemicals) E-liquids are produced with unknown procedures, materials and purity standards (& custom mixed by individuals at home increases the health risks) Youth perception is that these devices are safe and believe to be harmless water vapor, however the vapor contains no water at all, but mostly harmful chemicals They are so new to us we don’t know the long term effects!

10 Impact on Athletes Physical Activity causes the body to need more oxygen, and makes the heart beat faster Smoking/vaping decreases the delivery of oxygen to muscles during exercise Nicotine increases levels of blood lactate – this can make people feel fatigued or feel like quitting Impacts hand steadiness Can cause and exacerbate asthma symptoms

Because the FDA doesn't regulate these products, there aren't requirements around ingredient disclosure, warning labels, or youth access restrictions."
