4 Unit 12 Review for the midterm
Please take out your midterm review sheets (pink paper) We use the present perfect progressive to talk about something that is unfinished. We have been studying English (for 6 months). How do you form the present perfect progressive? Three parts: has/ have + been + verb(ing) We can also use the present perfect progressive to talk about things that are finished in the recent past. She has been exercising recently. (You can see the results).

5 Unit 12 Review for the midterm
We usually don’t use non-action verbs in the progressive. But it can be used sometimes, depending on your meaning. I have been thinking about moving to Texas. OK I have been knowing about the test. X

Can you use the present perfect and the present perfect progressive tenses to talk about the same thing? Yes! John has worked at the company for 10 years. Present perfect Is he still working at the company? Yes. John has been working at the company (for 10 years). Present perfect progressive

7 Reading: Ichiro Suzuki
What do you know about baseball? Here are the basics: 9 players on each team hit the ball and they run around on the field. The teams take turns. When a player has passed 4 bases, they make a run (or score a point). The team to get the most runs or points at the end of 9 innings (9 turns) wins the game. Today, we are going to watch one of baseball’s best players.

8 Reading Read the story about Ichiro Suzuki and then work together in your group to guess the grammar forms and the meanings of the underlined words.

Guidance (n) Advice or information from someone who knows a lot about something Ex. I asked my teacher for guidance about taking credit classes. Put off (phrasal verb or idiom) Stop liking someone or something Ex. I was put off by his smoking.

Dubbed (past tense verb) When someone is given a nickname Ex. I was dubbed “shorty” because I am short. Make a mark (idiom) To do something that makes someone famous Ex. Steve Jobs made a mark in the cell phone business.

Establish (him)self- (idiom) To achieve success so that people can see your skills or power Ex: Within six months, Mark had established himself as a great leader in the company.

12 Vocabulary discussion questions
Whose guidance do you ask for? Were you ever put off by a friend or a boyfriend or a girlfriend’s behavior? Were you ever dubbed a nickname that you didn’t like? Do you have any friends or family members who have made their mark at their jobs? What have you established yourself as in the past (work or school)?

13 Listening We are going to practice our listening skills for the midterm with a few exercises. Remember to take notes while you listen. Don’t try to write everything down. Only write down nouns, adjectives, adverbs and verbs.

14 Listening Read the questions on the quizzes on the board to understand what they are asking. Remember to take notes. Vocabulary to know: abandon (verb): in this case, "give up" the idea out of shape (idiom): in poor physical condition cut back on (phrasal verb): to reduce take up (phrasal verb): begin or start cardiovascular system (noun): your body`s blood circulation system including your heart, veins, and arteries

15 Listening Vocabulary to know:
pull over (verb): to move your car to the side of the road and stop pro (adjective): professional smash (verb): to hit something hard switch (verb): to change

16 Listening Vocabulary to know: starving (verb): very hungry
adaptation (noun), adapt (verb): a change or modification to something, revision mess up (phrasal verb): to make a mistake

17 Vocabulary worksheets
We will about 10 minutes to complete each these worksheets and we will go over the answers together.

18 Things to know for the midterm
I will start the midterm tomorrow at 7:15. DO NOT BE LATE! You are going to get your quizzes from last Thursday back so you can use them to study.
