In A-E, make your drawings on centimeter grid paper.
Problem 5.2 In A-E, make your drawings on centimeter grid paper.

Part A Draw a rectangle with an area of 18 cm2. Then try to draw a different rectangle with an area of 18 cm2. Do the rectangles have the same perimeter? If you couldn’t draw a different rectangle, explain why.

Part B Draw a rectangle with the dimensions 3 cm by 8 cm. Then try to draw a different rectangle with these same dimensions. Do the rectangles have the same area? If you couldn’t draw a different rectangle, explain why.

Part C Draw a parallelogram with a base of 7 cm and a height of 4 cm. Then try to draw a different parallelogram with these same dimensions. Do the parallelograms have the same area? If you couldn’t draw a different parallelogram, explain why.

Part D Draw a parallelogram with all side lengths equal to 6 cm. Then try to draw a different parallelogram with all side lengths equal to 6 cm. Do the parallelograms have the same area? If you couldn’t draw a different parallelogram, explain why.

Part E Draw a parallelogram with an area of 30 cm2. Then try to draw a different parallelogram with the same area. Do the parallelograms have the same perimeter? If you couldn’t draw a different parallelogram, explain why.

Follow-up Summarize what you have discovered from making parallelograms that fit given constraints. Include your feelings about what kinds of constraints make designing a parallelogram easy and what kinds of constraints make designing a parallelogram difficult. Have you discovered any shortcuts for finding area of parallelograms? If so, describe them.
