1 Collecting data [ S1.1 Core Plenary] Here are the results of a small survey of the ages of people visiting a cinema. Make a grouped frequency table of the data. Draw at least one conclusion from your grouped table. 33 40 34 30 21 25 20 19 49 51 53 31 27 39 26 23 57 45 18 28 38 59 17 60 36 24 Preamble An accessible task suitable for individuals or pairs. Pupils will need to decide on the number of intervals and their location – perhaps the most valuable aspects of the task. The number and diversity of the ages should reinforce the need for using a tally chart. Aspects of checking and how a tally ought to be performed should be mentioned in the concluding summing-up session. Possible content Deciding on appropriate intervals to draw a grouped frequency table. Resources None. Solution/Notes There are several possible equal groupings - as a rule of thumb between about 5 and 8 is a suitable number. The table shows that most of the cinema goers were young with most being under 35 and over a third under 25.
