1 L1: Force Learning Objectives: Describe what a force is.
Recall examples of forces. Explain the difference between a contact and a non-contact force. Draw force diagrams to represent different situations.

2 Forces A force is a push or a pull that acts on an object.
The unit for force is the Newton (N). Can you figure out the names of the forces on the worksheet? Word Bank Gravity upthrust drag Static electricity magnetism friction

3 A = upthrust B = magnetism C = gravity D = friction E = static electricity F = drag (air resistance)

4 Balanced and Unbalanced Forces
Balanced forces = equal forces working in opposite directions Stationary (non-moving) objects have balanced forces. Unbalanced forces are needed to start an object moving. Unbalanced forces cause an object to change it’s speed, direction, or shape.

5 Force diagrams
