1 Section 2- Vocabulary -tenant farmers: people who paid rent, either in money or crops, to grow crops on another person’s land -metic: resident alien -slavery: the ownership and control of other people as property

2 Women in Ancient Greece
Their rights and roles were different depending on the city state they lived in and what class they were Athens: women from richer families stayed at home, while men took part in public life Sparta: women enjoyed more rights and freedoms, they could sell properties; were educated and; trained in sports In most Greek homes, women supervised the household, raised children, kept track of money and spending, made clothes and managed the slaves

3 Greek Society Aristocracy- ruled by aristocrats and kings, who believed they were descendants of gods Society was divided among adult male citizens Citizens vs. non-citizens Immigrants from other city states or countries were called metics, they were not citizens Tenant farmers- people who paid rent either in crops or money

4 Slaves Lowest group in the class system
Slaves were acquired in different ways: prisoners of war, orphans, were sold by an owner/their families The majority of the population were slaves Tasks included: cooking, cleaning, etc. They had…NO LEGAL RIGHTS!

5 Greek Economic Expansion
Conquest Some city states obtained more land/resources than others through conquest (battle!) City states such as Sparta, located on the Peloponnesian peninsula decided not to depend on trade for growth, so they took over Messenia and took some of their citizens and made them non-freed laborers (slaves) Colonization Migration was a solution to population issues An ideal colony was off the coast, so they traveled by the sea to find new land to colonize They set up ports for trade along the coast They take fire from their home land and set it ablaze on new land to symbolize their ownership (Olympic torch)

6 Currency The first coins were created with a standardized value
This replaced the bartering system Greeks learned about the concept of coin usage from Lydia Each city state had their own mint (unique, coin making factory) Each coin had a symbolic image of the god/goddess that was their patron Athens- owl symbolizes Athena

7 Athens Grows Rich -As a result of good ports, job specialization and trading goods, Athens became prosperous The Effects of Expansion -Vessels became nicer and larger -Travel further -Merchant fleets were made to carry more goods for trade -Also effected government (section 3)
