4 Icebreaker for Families
15 minutes Icebreaker for Families Celebrations so far... What strategies do you use at home with your child to make sure they are mastering necessary skills? What skills does your child struggle with? Popcorn ideas as a small group and write them on chart paper. Share out with the entire room after 5 minutes. Easy icebreaker for families to share their successes so far since the first day of school Families can turn and talk with one another to discuss strategies they have in place at home and then discuss what their child may be struggling with. Chart the ideas on paper and then share out as a large group

5 Our Goals By the end of our time together tonight we will… Discuss foundational skills for this year that are needed. Review beginning of year (BOY) literacy data. Discuss home learning activities. Set a family goal for your child’s progress that will support our classroom goal. Class SMART Goal for 1st semester in literacy: By January 31, 2019… 80% of first grade students will have increased their NWF CLS score by 10 points. Share tonight’s meeting objectives with families Share class SMART goal (explain what SMART means - Strategic, Measureable, Attainable, Relevant, Timebound) and how this goal was determined to be the greatest area of need for literacy

15 minutes Foundational Skills & Data What do students need to master this year in this grade level? What does our beginning of the year (BOY) data look like for this class? Give families a the document that shares the foundational skills needed for this grade level this year Allow families to view the data for how students in the class are performing on those skills so far Explain a little regarding how this data is collected

7 Reading Literature (Fiction)
Key Ideas and Details * I can tell who, what, where, when, why and how after reading stories. * I can find the author’s purpose or message. Integration of Knowledge and Ideas * I can use words and pictures to help me tell about the characters, setting and plot. *This is what students need to leave 1st grade with in order to continue to be strong 2nd grade readers

8 Reading Informational Text (Nonfiction)
Key Ideas and Details * I can tell who, what, where, when, why and how after reading non-fiction. * I can find the main topic and details in a section of non-fiction. Craft and Structure * I can ask and answer questions to help understand new words. Integration of Knowledge and Ideas * I can use pictures and word details to describe important ideas. *This is what students need to leave 1st grade with in order to continue to be strong 2nd grade readers

9 Reading Foundational Skills Speaking and Listening
* I can understand parts of a sentence (first word, capitalization, ending punctuation.) * I can correctly say beginning, middle, and ending sounds in single-syllable words. * I can tell about different sounds in a word. * I can decode regularly spelled, one syllable words. Speaking and Listening * I can follow rules for discussions (ex. listening to others.) * I can talk with peers and adults in small or large groups. * I can ask questions during discussions to better understand the topic. * I can speak and write in complete sentences. *This is what students need to leave 1st grade with in order to continue to be strong 2nd grade readers

15 minutes Home Learning Activities Activities that families can implement at home: Non-sense word fluency practice Let’s Practice! Explain the activities that parents can do at home with their child Give them time to practice the activity with teacher support

11 This is an example of how parents can mark their students paper when assessing them so they know how many CLS their student did and how many WWR

12 Your family goal supports our class goal of:
15 minutes Goal Setting Set a goal that will help support your child’s progress to be accomplished by the next time we all meet in the Spring (2nd semester) after middle of the year (MOY) data has been collected for literacy. Commit to the steps needed to take to help achieve this goal Your family goal supports our class goal of: By January 31, 2019… 80% of first grade students will have increased their NWF CLS score by 10 points.
