RedCLARA: The Research And Education Network Of Latin America Florencio I. Utreras Executive Director Cooperación Latino Americana de Redes Avanzadas (CLARA)

RedCLARA: The Network

The ALICE Project @LIS Research Networks Initiative 12.5 Million Euros where 10 Million provided by EuropeAid, 2.5 Million provided by LA Partners European Partners: DANTE, FCCN, GARR, RedIRIS, Renater Latin American Partners: 18 National Research and Education Networks coordinated by CLARA Start dage: June 1, 2003 End date: March 31, 2008 Proposed continuation until 2011

ALICE’s Results A regional Research and Education Network has been created 13 LA Countries connected 8 New NREN’s have been created Technical training provided to engineers of all 18 NREN’s Over 750 Universities and Research Institutions connected Several Research Collaborations of large scale with high end science groups

The WHREN/LILA Project WHREN: Western Hemisphere Research and Education Network LILA Links Interconnecting Latin America Submited to NSF in April 2004 leaded by CENIC and FIU Aproved by NSF in December 2004 1.2 Gbps Link Tijuana-San Diego-LA 2.4 Gbps Sao Paulo-Miami shared with CHEPREO and ANSP Connections to PacWave and Atlantic Wave

LILA Links RedCLARA: The R&E Network Backbone links Link to Europe

RedCLARA’s Development Plan Future backbone should be composed at least of CLARA owned dark fiber in the following links AR-CL AR-BR The Intercontinental link to Europe should reach 2.5 Gbps during 2009 growing to 1.2 Gbps in 2008 The PA-MX and PA-CL should be at least STM-4 as well as the BR-MX The Node in Miami should be connected to PA at 1.2 Gbps RedCLARA will have an additional peering point in Miami with US Networks Most links to countries should reach STM-1 speed by 2009

CLARA: The Organization

CLARA: Cooperación Latino Americana De Redes Avanzadas 18 Latin American NREN’s are the partners Not for Profit International Organization Legally established in Uruguay in December 2004 Vision: System of collaboration for the research, science and innovation of Latin America through the use of advanced networks

CLARA’s Objectives Coordination among the National Research and Education Networks of Latin America and with those of other regions Cooperation for the promotion of science and technology Planning and Implementation of network services for the regional interconnection to the NREN’s Development of a Regional Network: RedCLARA to interconnect the NREN’s of LA and of them to other continents
