Been under European influence since 1500s Began with Cortes Primarily Spain & Portugal Creoles Spanish decedents born in Latin America Held most of the power in Latin America Similar frustrations to U.S. when colonists Passed over for native Spaniards Peninsular Limited economically Napoleonic Wars distracted/weakened Spain & Portugal Unable to control monopoly in colonies

Simon Bolivar “The Liberator” Jose de San Martín Crossing of the Andes mountains Bolivar and Martín meet in Ecuador (1822) Bolivar continues to liberate Peru, complete S-A independence Brazil Had a much more peaceful movement Congress of Panama (1826) Failed attempt to unify South American countries

3 Mexican Independence (1810-1821)
Leaders Miguel Hidalgo Guadalupe Victoria, Vicente Guerrero Army of the Three Guarantees Santa Anna Leads off and on for 22 years Texas Revolution ( ) Battle of the Alamo Mexico loses Texas to America Mexican-American War ( ) Sees Mexico lose California and most of the SW U.S.

Monroe Doctrine (1823) Told European nations to stay out of the Americas Enforced with help from Great Britain American Civil War ( ) America distracted, looked weak to Europe Made Latin America (L-A) look susceptible to colonization Roosevelt Corollary (1904) U.S. states it will involve itself in L-A affairs Develops an export based economy Cheap goods Originated from Colonial system
