2. Traditional Dark stained woods, like cherry, mahogany, oak
Traditional style uses lots of stained woods, traditional lines on furniture like wing-back chairs and queen-anne style furniture. Iron furniture, and wicker. Think of this style like you are in a museum. You usually see wood floors, historical colors on the walls and could even see antique furniture or reproductions of antiques. Fabrics like tapestries, laces, plaids, brocades chintz, moire’, just to name a few.
Oriental rugs cover dark stained wood floors.

Give students a moment to study the pictures to see traditional elements: check or plaid prints, dark stained wood tones, wing back chairs, Windsor chairs, ladder back chairs, are just a few traditional styles and stained trim.

4. Contemporary Sleek clean lines Metals and glass
Contemporary design is known for sleek clean lines, slick finishes, leathers and unusual furniture styles. Technology drives this design style. Primary colors used are whites, blacks and greys but usually always has an accent color to add interest. Kitchen cabinets are usually slick shiny finishes with polished metals. Glass top tables mixed with metals. Think of New York or innovative design. Some people think of this style as cold. Usually young professionals are attracted to this style because it is something they might have in the office setting. Concrete flooring or countertops would be found in this style as well but it would be highly polished.

6. Eclectic Lots of different colors
The eclectic style has lots of different colors as if the person has been all over the world and collected something from everywhere and stuck it in a room. It is like a collection of lots of things. It is also known as the bohemian style/gypsy style.

Bright colors, lots of different patterns mixed together, collections of things, looks like they have traveled the world.

8. Transitional Traditional style with contemporary twist
This style is known as casual elegance. It has traditional lines and styles of furniture but has been tweaked to make it more funky or modern.
There is always a mixture of textures and stains with paints. Accessories will be a mixture of traditional elements and contemporary elements. Think funky and elegant. Golds and other metals are mixed with polished and matte finishes.

The cottage style is defined by the rustic finishes, furniture and worn comfy elements. This style is simple items along with natural elements. Whitewashed, grey washed or natural woods on floors, furniture table tops. Mixture of patterns small and large. Lots of whites, off whites and lighter colors intertwined with natural elements. Paint finishes are sanded to look worn or aged. Casual feeling.

11. What are the cottage elements in the two pictures?
Simple elements, whites and light accent colors. Natural elements, wood floors, aged or rustic elements along with aged metals. Matte or natural finishes. Slipcovers are typically found on upholstery with accent pillows. Antiques are mixed with rustic furniture.

There are lots of different interior design styles. If time allows; have students look at these interior design styles or another one they might be drawn to. They need to research furniture styles, fabrics and patterns used, wallpaper patterns, colors, accessories and then put pictures with the styles.
