Bear River Rocket Club Parachute Project 2

Experiment #2 Parachute Size

Problem Will the circumference of a parachute pulling 130g dropped from a distance of 2 meters affect the average drop velocity/speed?

Hypothesis If……Then……

Materials

Procedure Transfer data from your last experiment into the data table for this experiment under parachute #1 Using the small cardboard pattern construct a parachute using the same technique that you used in experiment #1 Calculate the circumference (C) for the parachute made (C= d) D= diameter: =3.14 Measure 2 meters and mark it for a parachute drop point.

Do 10 trial drops, dropping the weight from the 2 meter mark
Do 10 trial drops, dropping the weight from the 2 meter mark. Hold the parachute above the weight and release both of them at the same time. Use stopwatches to record drop times. Write times in data table.         Untape shroud lines from parachute you will use these again on your next parachute. Measure in 2 cm from the edge of your parachute and cut off making a smaller diameter parachute. Reattach shroud lines and weight. Repeat steps 3-6 for this parachute.

·   Results:(graph) oSketch a line graph to represent your data (Use a different color line for each circumference parachute)(Speed vs. drop #)

Conclusion Conclusion: My hypothesis was…………. Restate hypothesis with results

Analysis ·   Analysis: What did you learn? Unusual events? Further questions?
