Administrative Pipeline: An introduction to district leadership roles as well as preparation for the role of school leader - prioritizing decisions with in-basket exercises and simulations Encouraged shadowing of different levels, conducted in feeder chain groups, inter-rater reliability and effective feedback Introducing another aspect of serving as “administrator for a day” for those participants who are NOT administrators

Observations and Effective Feedback Evaluation Training Certification In ADDITION to LTMs where professional growth is provided monthly; changed focus of monthly meetings to be instructional, rather than compliance; principals sit with their feeder chain principals.

7 ADMIN. 100 First and second year Assistant Principals
Collaboration with Area Coordinators Experienced mentors Meetings 4-5 times a year Although voluntary, we have 100% participation. Community Circles Meet with district personnel Meet whole group then in elem./secondary groups then with mentor Agendas customized to meet needs. Most important time-community circle—an atmosphere of trust that allows for them to ask questions, seek clarification, or even just seek understanding and support in a safe environment Survey results—100% found beneficial

8 AP Academy All Assistant Principals (required)
Simulations, cause-effect decision-making, professional readings, collaboration Meetings 3-4 times a year 2 hrs. (1 in a.m., 1 in p.m. for each group each time, , to accommodate leaders/schools) Agenda customized to meet needs Addressing the need to cross-train our secondary AP’s, who have been operating in silos—curriculum, facilities, discipline Focus on instructional leadership!—The Multiplier Effect (book study)

9 National Certification for Principal Mentors
Yearlong training for an 11 member team NAESP Sponsored Team supports first and second year principals Team is developing a District Certification Program for Principal Mentors Once complete training, district-certified to assist first/second year and/or struggling principals. Over half our principals are certified coaches. Discuss project … the creation of a certification program We added an update to the evaluation requirements, requiring those principals or APs who switch levels (e.g. elem to MS; MS to HS; secondary to elementary) will have a midterm evaluation for one year. This recognizes the unique nuances existing within each level.

Required once every three years (calibration and recalibration) Whole day training for assistant principals; half day training for principals Facilitated by Cambridge Education and HR Staff Skill development for feedback conferences SUPERVISOR’s perspective Overview of requirements for formal/informal observations Skills for pre and post conferencing Skill Practices included using videos and/or scenarios based on district teachers’ observation instrument Also useful for conferencing with APs, other adults Jennifer Abrams-Having Hard Conversations
