1 Warm up, 9/29 Identify the three most vivid IMAGES from your reading yesterday. Try to find one from each story. What makes these images so vivid to you?

2 Finish Reading Style, Speaking of Courage, and Notes. Take notes on
Imagery Diction (the words the characters say, how they say them, etc.) Syntax (the organization of words in a sentence, sentence length, etc.)

3 Learning Targets To summarize findings from yesterday’s and today’s reading. To synthesize a variety of student perspectives into one cohesive group response to questions about the effects of O’Brien’s stylistic choices. To describe independently how O’Brien’s writing style affects the meaning of the text.

4 Group Work Count off by six.
In your groups, review your notes on the category that was assigned to your group (imagery, diction, or syntax). Answer these questions: Look at the notes for each vignette. How do they CHANGE or PROGRESS throughout the vignettes? After reading over everyone’s notes, how would you CHARACTERIZE O’Brien’s use of your category? Overall, what is the EFFECT of your category?

5 Homework Quickwrite: Answer this question in three to five sentences:
How do O’Brien’s writing choices affect the meaning of the text? Read In the Field and take notes on attitude, literary elements, organization, and the type of writing (use the back of Style Analysis handout).
