8 Why is it a big deal? Eli review
It's important for you all to get familiar with these programs because we'll be using them throughout the semester. Eli Review makes up 20% of your grade. Late submission or failing to turn in work could be the difference between a passing and failing final grade in this class.

9 Eli review: things to remember
Watch those due dates on Eli Review! Also, if you have any questions about the assignments or Eli Review, talk to your classmates and talk to me. Don't just not turn in your work because you were unsure. Use your resources.

10 Eli review: draft #1 mediated values essay
If you did not turn in the draft to Eli Review by class time, it is already late. However, if you want feedback on your paper, you have until 11:59:59, Tuesday, Jan 30, to turn it in. On Wednesday, I will be setting up groups for peer feedback. If you want to participate and receive feedback, you will need to turn it in by the end of Tuesday on Eli Review.

11 Eli review: draft #1 mediated values essay
Due Thursday, Feb 1, by class time, you will provide feedback to your peers on the Mediated Values Essay.

12 When giving feedback, use describe-evaluate-suggest
Reminder When giving feedback, use describe-evaluate-suggest Describe the claim by summarizing the relevant passage (What did the passage say in your own words?) … say what you see as a reader. Evaluate - Explain how the text meets or does not meet the criteria established in the prompt. Suggest - offer concrete advice for improvement.

13 Reminder(s) on feedback
How to Provide Constructive Criticism 1. Use describe-evaluate-suggest method. 3. Point out specific strengths and weaknesses. Give very specific comments, criticisms, and compliments. Be sure to identify the exact sections of the paper that you are critiquing. Give very specific recommendations and raise specific objections if they will be helpful. *When you point out a weakness, make sure to offer a suggestion for how to improve that weakness.* 4. Write well. Critiques need to be clear, organized, and coherent examples of the kind of writing that you are encouraging in your peers. Lead by example. 5. Be fair but critical. Do not be disrespectful. Similarly, don’t simply just say that everything is perfect. All papers can be improved no matter how strong they may seem.

14 Tuesday’s readings (Freewriting)
On your sheet of paper, write down a few things you learned or heard about writing. You can answer any (or all) of the following: What did you learn about the “essay” in high school? What kind of writing habits did you form in high school, and what kind of writing habits do you want to form in college? What are some rumors (or assumptions) that you have heard abut writing at the college level?

15 Habits to break / things to unlearn
The 5-paragraph essay Easy to write, easy to grade Teaches basic organization Teaches focus You may have learned a lot of things about writing in high school. The 5-paragraph essay or the 1 sentence thesis statement are great foundations to build on. However, writing is not rules-based. Writing is not simply a matter of following a formula.

16 There is no single rule set for college writing.
Tuesday’s readings College Writing Harder to write, harder to grade Higher levels of complexity (Allows for more complex thoughts and communication.) There is no single rule set for college writing.

17 What is rhetoric?

18 What is Rhetoric? Rhetoric: The art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the use of figures of speech and other persuasive techniques.

19 Facts themselves do not persuade. Values, emotions, and pathos do.

21 Practicing rhetoric, audience, purpose
Who is the audience? What is the purpose? What are some rhetorical choices/rhetorical appeals that the ad makers used to persuade the audience?

22 Practicing rhetoric, audience, purpose
To determine a specific audience, ask yourself the following: 1.) What KIND of readers/viewers does the text/piece attract? 2.) How much would the audience know about the subject matter presented in the text/piece? 3.) What is the level of language being used in the text? (Does it appeal to a specialized group or is it written in accessible terms?) 4.) What attitude would the audience have towards the topic and why? (Would they agree or disagree? Would they be neutral?)

23 Due Thursday, Feb 1, by class time, you will provide feedback to your peers on the Mediated Values Essay. You will also want to rate the comments/feedback you receive. (1-5 stars)
