2 What is the Columbian Exchange
The Exchange of plants, animals, and ideas between the New World and the Old World. New World= The Americas Old World= Europe Brought new goods to improve the lives of Europeans Massive changes to Native Americans’ way of life.

3 B. Culture and Technology
Europeans sent missionaries to convert the native people to Christianity. South Americans were taught Spanish, Portuguese, and Dutch. Europeans brought guns, steel, and introduced the idea of using animals for labor. (ie. Oxes and Horses) Europeans created large plantation farms to grow sugarcane.

4 C. Society and Economy Europeans created plantations and mines to make money. Many Native Americans were enslaved to work in mines and on plantations. Eventually slaves from Africa will be brought to work. Settlers mixed with Native peoples to create new ethnicities. Society is based on Racism= Belief that some people are better than others because of racial traits like skin color.

5 D. Disease Affected both Native Americans and Europeans
Many Europeans died of Malaria in the New World Smallpox brought by Europeans devastated Native Americans 80% decline in indigenous populations after contact with Europeans. Other diseases included Measles, Typhus, and Influenza
