1 Monitor & Control Project
Project Assumptions: Mention that you are in INITIATE PROJECT phase, only planning the preliminary scope, schedule, budget and risk management planning information and identifying the stakeholders for the PROJECT EXECUTION phase, if the project gets approval to commence. This means you will not be include the other project management WBS activities in the project scope and schedule, and that there is only one project manager assigned to the project.  You are here NOW Initiate Project Only planning the preliminary scope, schedule, budget and risk management planning information and identifying the stakeholders for this phase Plan Project Execute Project Close Project Monitor & Control Project

2 Scope Planning Concepts
Defines the design components, when assembled, is the project’s product Product Scope WBS/Project Scope Defines the groupings of work activities, to be built and integrated, tested and install to deliver the project’s product Design components Essentially the structure of work groupings to build, integrate the design components to become the product, test and install it Installed, tested & integrated design components , aka project’s product Essentially, the WBS is a DELIVERABLE oriented breakdown of project work into smaller chunks and a WBS’s deliverable is one of a project’s product’s design component

3 An example: A House Construction Project Its product scope elements
PRODUCT = House Product Scope Elements Foundation Deliverable Building Structure Deliverable Interiors Deliverable Landscape Deliverable Project Mgt Service Deliverable Council Inspection Service Delv. Functional Elements Non Functional Elements System Function 1 System Function 1 System Function 1 System Function 1 Quality Mgt Project Mgt For software products

4 An example: A House Construction Project Its WBS scope elements
PRODUCT = House Plan blueprint Dig earth Organise manpower & materials Lay Foundation Plan Interior Design Construct Pillars & beams Construct Walls Install plumbing Install electricity cables Decide Furniture Decide Lightings Procure Decorate Plan Garden Landscape Decide & procure plants Landscape garden Plant the chosen plants Plan House Design Agree project plan & costs Organise tradespeople Supervise construction Manage payment receipts & disbursements Apply for building permit Organise Inspection Receive approvals Foundation Deliverable Building Structure Deliverable Interiors Deliverable Landscape Deliverable Project Mgt Service Deliverable Council Inspection Service Delv. Product Scope Elements WBS Scope Elements

5 An example: A House Construction Project Its WBS scope elements
For a software project, the WBS Scope is influenced by the choice of SDLC methodology. Each WBS grouping will refer to a set or individual functional or non functional software design/PM/testing artefacts

6 The Design Documentation of a Software Product
Develop Coding Logic Identify Coding Objects Code programming logic Unit Test coded logic Conceptualise System Design Develop Logical System Design Develop Platform Specific System Design Program Code Documentation Business Requirement Spec Conceptual Functional Specs Process User Journeys Data See Notes User Requirement Spec System (Logical) Functional Specs Test Plan & Execution Results Documentation Process GUI Data Collect Req Analyse & Model Req Document Req Testing Activities: Design User Acceptance Testing Requirements (from user specs) Define project quality management methodology Design software quality test plans – identify the levels of testing plans, inclusive of their test cases and data requirements Setup testing environment Executive quality test plans Report testing results Signoff Testing Technical Functional Specs Installation & Training Documentation Process GUI Data Plan implementation actions Develop training programs Prepare Live Environment Install & Test Live System System installation sign-off & report

7 Example of a Waterfall SDLC & Testing Activities in a typical field project
Setup Project Environment Setup Live Environment (Waterfall) SDLC Phases Test Closure Install System Define UAT Test Requirements Develop Project Quality Plan Setup Testing Environment Software Testing Lifecycle Phases

8 Project Schedule Design
WBS Scope planning only identifies the static hierarchical structure of the SLDC and testing work activities that produce the software product During SCHEDULING, you work out the interdependencies between the SDLC activities within and across each WBS work groups when you use the GANTT chart or NETWORK DIAGRAM. This is where the WBS model in SCOPE planning is different from the WBS in SCHEDULE Planning (both uses the same WBS elements through) Use the NETWORK DIAGRAM to identify the critical path, stating why it is the most important aspect of Project Schedule Mgt work.

9 Project Schedule Design
Static WBS activities are reused in SCHEDULE planning in listing out the activities to be scheduled

11 Many ways to configure the SDLC activities in each sprint/iteration cycle eg

12 The specifics of what makes up agile (or even waterfall) Product Scope & WBS elements depends on the specific open or proprietary SDLC methodology used EG SCRUM

13 Take Away Product Scope WBS Scope WBS Schedule
Identify the System Functions & Testing Deliverables for PROJECT EXECUTION PHASE Identify the WBS work groups for delivering the major product scope elements WBS is a static model of project work breakdown of activities Schedule the WBS work groups, which require you to firstly understand the their workflow interdependencies. WBS is a interdepended, scheduled workflow model Design the Software Architecture Artefacts Design the Software SDLC, testing & installation workflows to deliver software product Design the time-schedule for executing Software SDLC, testing & installation workflows, including assigning appropriately skilled personnel's to the SDLC & testing work

14 Sprint & Story points in Agile SDLC
Stories equivalent to either Conceptual or System Functions
