The Temperance Movement was an attempt to reform American society by ending the sale and consumption of alcohol.
Many women’s rights advocates supported temperance because they saw drunken, alcoholic husbands abuse their wives and families.
For Americans who supported the Temperance movement, their goal was to make the sale of alcohol illegal in the U.S—this was known as prohibition.

5. The Temperance Movement
With the 18th amendment, passed in 1920, prohibition became the law and it was illegal to sell or consume alcohol in the United States.
Because this law was not effectively enforced and led to the rise of organized crime, this amendment was eventually repealed (removed).
Today, Americans are able to buy and sell alcohol legally, but alcoholism and its negative effects persist.
