1697 New York: Saloons closed on Sundays, because of the day of worship. st state to go DRY… Georgia (Failed, repealed in 1742) 1880 Rise of the Temperance movement lead by the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. By 1900 more than 50% of the United States had become DRY through state laws that were passed. Liquor could still be shipped from another state where it was legal. 1913 Interstate Liquor Act- Made it illegal to ship to a dry state. the 18th Amendment to the Constitution- Hard Liquor was banned. 1919 Volstead Act Passed- Banned all alcohol more than ½ %
