Lesson Overview 3.3 Energy Flow in Ecosystems

2 THINK ABOUT IT What happens to energy stored in body tissues when one organism eats another? Energy moves from the “eaten” to the “eater.” Where it goes from there depends on who eats whom! Energy flows through an ecosystem in a one-way stream, from primary producers to various consumers.

3 Food Chains food chain -a series of steps in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten. In aquatic ecosystems, Phytoplankton, floating algae, are primary producers. In land ecosytems, Plants are primary producers.

4 Food Webs Food web – network of feeding interactions. (food chains)
- more realistic of ecosystems

5 Decomposers and Detritivores in Food Webs
Detritivores – eat detritus, broken down organic material. Ex. Crayfish, grass shrimp, worms Decomposers – break down and release nutrients that can be used by primary producers. Without decomposers, those nutrients would be locked in the organism.

6 Food Webs and Disturbance
When disturbances to food webs happen, their effects can be dramatic. For example, all of the animals in this food web depend directly or indirectly on shrimplike animals called krill. Krill are one example of small, zooplankton – small swimming animals

7 Trophic Levels and Ecological Pyramids
What do the three types of ecological pyramids illustrate? Pyramids of energy show the relative amount of energy available at each trophic level. A pyramid of biomass illustrates the relative amount of living organic matter at each trophic level.

trophic level – Each step in a food chain or food web Primary producers always make up the first trophic level. Various consumers occupy every other level.

Ecological pyramids – show the relative amount of energy or matter contained within each trophic level in a given food chain or food web. 3 types – Energy, Biomass, and Numbers

10 Pyramids of Energy Organisms expend much of the energy they acquire on life processes, such as respiration, movement, growth, and reproduction. Most of the remaining energy is released into the environment as heat—a byproduct of these activities. On average, about 10 percent of the energy available within one trophic level is transferred to the next trophic level.

11 Pyramids of Biomass and Numbers
biomass – The total amount of living tissue within a given trophic level - depends on amount of energy available. A pyramid of numbers shows the relative number of individual organisms at each trophic level in an ecosystem.
