Conflict Unit 1 – Year 11 Lesson 3 – artwork stimulus

2 Write a word on the whiteboard for what you think this character is feeling…

3 Learning Outcomes By the end of this lesson you will be able to:
Content: explore the theme of Conflict through the stimulus of artwork. Process: doing this through the stimuli of imagery/artwork, using the drama mediums of mime, movement and gesture, space & levels and spoken language. We will also use the drama element of characterisation. Benefits: the opportunity to see how artwork can stimulate Drama as much as any other form of expression.

4 Let’s Imagine… …That this character has an inner-conflict. What Dramatic technique could be used to depict their inner-conflict? What does this mean??

5 Inner-conflict In groups of 3 you will demonstrate this character’s inner-conflict. You may utilise the following resources you have available to you: white board words spoken language combination of the two

6 Life-conflict We are now going to imagine that this character in The Scream has a life conflict. What could we mean by Life Conflict? As a group of 6 – doubled up with another 3 decide on one life conflict to depict for your character. Through a series of 3 still images you are going to depict the life conflict of this character. You must use: Mime, body language, facial expression and gesture Space and levels

7 Depiction As a group of 6 you now need to combine these two approaches to a depiction of your own. You are imagining the conflict in this characters life and making stylistic choices as to how this could be presented to an audience.

8 Success Criteria You could use thought-track to represent the characters inner feelings and emotions. You could use whiteboard or spoken language to represent the Conflict. You could use moments of stillness vs action to emphasise certain moments (marking the moment) You must use facial expression, body language and gesture. You must use the medium of voice. You must include everyone and have a minimum of 30secs of Drama by the end of the lesson.

9 Show back Share your work with the class.
What conflict did they depict? What emotions did this spark in us? What was the effect of the mediums they chose to use?

10 Notebook review Using your Notebooks write up this session using the learning outcomes slide to structure it.  You must refer to the ways you used: Mediums Elements Stimuli

11 Final Thought… Can you think of any character’s from film/literature who you feel have an inner-conflict?
