1 Social Studies Bellwork – Yesterday we talked about survival and the tools you would need to survive. If you were stranded on a desert island and only had THREE items with you, ANY THREE ITEMS, what would they be and why?

Please put the vocabulary chart in your folder or someplace safe. Please get out your textbook and read pages 2-3 and 8-9. On a piece of notebook paper, write down how historians are like detectives

4 Discussion: How are historians like detectives?
They research Maps, photos, written descriptions They examine objects found (evidence) Keep records, save objects

5 Archaeology and other sources (8-9)
Archaeology – the scientific study of ancient cultures through the examination of artifacts and other evidence Anthropology – the study of humankind in all aspects, especially development and culture. Anthropologists seek to understand the origins of humans and the way humans developed physically. Oral tradition – a community’s cultural and historical background, passed down in spoken stories and songs.

6 The Historians’ Tools Primary Sources: written or created during the actual time of a historical event. Examples: Letters, diaries, videos, photos, maps, fossils, artifacts, tools.

7 The historians’ tools Secondary Sources: written or created after the actual time of a historical event. Examples: books, paintings, articles, media reports.

8 The Historians’ Tools Verbal History: stories, songs, or legends passed down between generations.
