2 Data Management: 1990s to Present
1990s – Present 2000s – Present Backup Software a Dedupe Metadata Replication Catalog Database Backup & Replication Software Backup Servers Backup Proxies Backup Storage Tape Off-site Archive Backup Storage Let me take you back in time Not much has really changed since 1990 We have large levels of complexity Backup software components (servers & proxies) that reside on servers Backup media agents Replication components Catalog database Tape and offsite storage Any one of the components can fail at any one point in time over a 3-5 year period.

3 SQL Server Backup Challenges
1990s - Present Databases Job Scripts X 100 Environment Scale Agent Services Backup Jobs And Software Backup Admin Tape Off-site Archive Backup Storage Backup Storage SQL backups have additional challenges: - You have databases you need to backup and you need to manage all the different types of backups(fulls, differentials, and logs) to maintain your RTO and RPO. Jobs and scripts must be maintained across your servers and databases to execute all your backups. These could be SQL agent jobs running native scripts or agent services running third party backup utilities. Both of these need to be managed and maintained, adding additional overhead. As the SQL environment scales, the number of touch points (databases and jobs) grows, increasing the amount of work that you need to maintain your backups. Storing backups can be challenging. DBAs usually have to work with a backup admin or backup team, adding an additional layer of management to get at and use their backups. Backup storage is typically a contention point between both the storage teams and the DBA teams, leading to shorter retention periods. Add on to this that backups will often be written off to tape and off site. This is managed by the backup team and usually hard for the DBA to get at and use.

4 Meet Rubrik Cloud Data Management
Backup Software Private a Dedupe Metadata Public Replication Catalog Database Backup Servers Backup Proxies Backup Storage Off-site Archive Tape Rubrik converges backup software, replication, catalog databases, deduplicated storage, and more into a single software fabric that can be easily deployed as plug-and-play appliances, software appliances, or in the cloud. It does not retain the complex, bloated architecture reminiscent of legacy data protection solutions, whether it’s running on-prem or in the cloud. Rubrik provides a single software platform to orchestrate application data from data center to cloud. Instantly power on any application anywhere for recovery, search, cloud, and test/dev. Since Rubrik is built on a scale-out architecture that allows users to continue managing as a single system and scale out easily with no forklift upgrades. Software fabric for orchestrating apps and data across clouds. No forklift upgrades.

5 How it Works - SQL Server
Automate Database Protection: Intelligent SLA policy engine for effortless management. Incremental Forever Backups: Minimize backup times and storage. Instant Recovery: Live Mount Databases, allowing rapid access to data. Secure: End-to-end encryption. Immutability to fight Ransomware. Role Based Access Control: Empowers DBAs to use Rubrik for what they need. Cloud: “CloudOut” automatically archives data to the cloud. Rubrik’s global search allows you easy access. Private Public SLA Policy Engine Log Management Automate Database Protection: Leverage Rubrik’s SQL Policy engine to protect multiple databases across servers. Customers can create policies that define backups for hundreds of databases and can be applied with only a few clicks. Incremental Forever Backups: Rubrik backs up SQL Server with an incremental forever approach, allowing us to capture only the changes for each backup we take. Since we use the Microsoft APIs to take these backups, SQL Server recognizes our process as standard SQL backups, even though we minimize the amount of data we transfer. This provides storage, network, and backup time efficiency. Instant Recovery: Rubrik’s SQL Live Mount technology allows users to quickly mount any database backup off the Rubrik device in seconds. This gives rapid access to your SQL data. Secure: Rubrik’s backups are encrypted in flight and at rest, protecting your data in all phases. Our immutable backups ensure that your data is protected against physical corruption and ransomware attacks. Role Based Access Control: Rubrik provides Role Based Access Control to allow you to create defined roles for your users. This means that DBAs can use Rubrik to manage their backups without having to worry about other parts of the environment. Cloud: Rubrik’s automated archival process allows you to easily move older backups to the cloud for long term storage. Rubrik’s single software management and cataloging allows you to seamlessly retrieve and restore these backups without the need for other tools.

6 The Difference with Rubrik
Software-Defined Data Management Set-and-Forget Simplicity Cloud-Native Design Software convergence collapses bloated, legacy architecture into one platform that scales linearly. No backup s/w needed. Self-learning system that minimizes daily management. Automate service delivery with APIs. Don’t get bogged down by complex knobs. Mobilize your apps and data across data center and cloud. CloudOut, CloudOn, and run Rubrik in the cloud. How do we compare to newer startups? 1. Software-defined approach that converges entire backup stack. Laser-focused on data management (backup). Compare to storage-centric approach. Our approach is to orchestrate apps and data across data center and cloud. 2. Set-and-forget simplicity through Rubrik’s self-learning system (proof points: auto-discovery of environment, SLA policy engine, performance throttling) and service automation with REST APIs and self-service (RBAC). Integrate Rubrik within your ideal stack (Puppet, Chef, vRealize Automation, ServiceNow, any service that supports outbound REST). Compare with complex, overwhelming configuration options. Rubrik auto-tunes to your needs. 3. Cloud-native design means that Rubrik delivers breadth and depth of cloud capabilities on modern architecture. Archive your data to cloud, instantiate apps in the cloud for DR or test/dev, and protect cloud-native applications. Run Rubrik anywhere to protect and manage your on-prem and cloud apps.
