IBM is announcing an exiting new data protection offering, as part of the Spectrum Family.
The new solution is called IBM Spectrum Protect Plus, and it is focused on protection and recovery of virtual environments. The first public announcement will be on Aug. 22nd, followed shortly thereafter by a dedicated booth with public demonstrations at VMworld in Las Vegas.
The key use case will be data protection for virtual machines and applications, however Spectrum Protect Plus will also focus on disaster recovery and data re-use use cases such as test-dev, reporting and so on.

So what is Spectrum Protect Plus?
Spectrum Protect Plus is the future of IBM’s data recovery and data reuse portfolio. The key value areas are highlighted on the right: Spectrum Protect Plus is modern technology that is easy to use, fast, fast to deploy, fast to configure, and enables fast backup, through snapshots, fast recovery, and low cost.
It’s focused on virtual machine protection for both VMware and Hyper-V environments.
Unlike a lot of products, you don’t have to be a backup expert to use Spectrum Protect Plus. It’s very simple and intuitive to use. Now thru secure, self-service administration, the data protection administrator can set service levels for their backup data and put the power of data recovery and access in the hands of the people that need it.
The software is simple to deploy and can be ready to go in as little as 15 minutes by installing a pre-built virtual machine. You can deploy it as a standalone solution, or as part of your Spectrum Protect environment.
And finally, you’ll realize a rapid time to value and after some simple configuration can be up and running in a little as an hour, compared to some solutions that can take weeks to deploy and require costly professional services.

So, why Spectrum Protect Plus?
If we look at the future of where data protection is going – the answer becomes more obvious.

Starting with SLA based protection policies, one key to Spectrum Protect Plus is it’s “pick, click and done simplicity.” It’s really as easy as selecting the recovery service level that you require, either picking from one of the pre-defined gold, silver and bronze SLAs, or custom creating your own to meet your needs. Then you apply that service level to one or more virtual machines. And you’re done!
If you miss any VMs, the dashboard view will quickly identify any that were missed so you can correct them and make sure you’re covered.

So not only is it simple for backup or storage admins to set policies to create data copies, today’s data protection solution needs to enable anyone who has the proper credentials to recover or access copies of backup data for different use cases. The solution comes with multiple pre-defined access roles. This means you can assign product functionality based on user types. For example, a backup admin can be given full access to the solution, while a software developer may be limited to only bringing up copies of specific data sets. Similarly, perhaps a help desk employee is granted access to only recovery capability, and not the ability to set schedules or define policies.
With the proper application of role-based access, you can even move to a self-service model. IT doesn’t have to be involved in every request for recovery or copy delivery. This can greatly reduce the load on the IT staff, who often spend a great deal of time on repetitive tasks such as copy delivery.

Backups are stored as snapshot images, and that means you can recover data very quickly. There is no need to run a streaming restore that copies data from a target device. You just access backups directly and immediately from a simple mount point.

A major competitive advantage Spectrum Protect Plus has is its integration with Spectrum Protect. While organization need the fast and efficient capabilities of Protect Plus for day to day operational recovery and data access, many organizations still need to keep data for longer periods of time to meet regulatory or compliance goals. Data can be copied directly from Spectrum Protect Plus to Spectrum Protect, and from there it can moved to any of the numerous storage tiers supported by Spectrum Protect, including disk, a wide range of tape devices, multiple cloud data stores, and object storage, including IBM Cloud Object Storage. Keep in mind the client needs to be running 8.1 or higher – this is a good reason to get your clients to upgrade.

With all that background, now let’s put the pieces in place and diagram the Spectrum Protect Plus architecture to see how this works.
We start with the key components in place: the virtual environments (on the left), the Spectrum Protect Plus virtual machine deployed, and the storage component, a scalable storage pool built on a combination of Spectrum Protect Plus software and any storage. This storage pool can run on either a virtual or physical server.
[First click] The Spectrum Protect Plus management VM will communicate with the virtual environments. This is part of the backup scheduling as well as cataloging processes.
[Second click] Protect Plus then kicks off a block-level forever backup to the storage pool. Each backup is stored as a read/write snapshot.
[Third click] You can then use any backup image to restore, whether back to the virtual environment for recovery, or for any of the multi-purpose use cases that were discussed earlier.
[Fourth click] Finally, if desired, you can tier data to Spectrum Protect, onto multiple different storage options.
