1. What Country Would You Take Over?
DIRECTIONS: You and your group members are trusted members of the president’s advisory panel. The president has come to you with an important task. It seems that America needs to colonize (occupy and control another foreign land) for the purpose of gaining more resources and new markets for our goods. This task is not easy however. The president needs to know which country you recommend taking over, based on the following:
Are there water resources? Is there much agriculture there?
Do they have a strong military that would put up a fight?
Would it be a good market? (Do the people have money to spend?)
What natural hazards are there? (natural disasters)
Would your answers to the above affect the ability to farm or build factories?
How stable is the country? Is it defendable? (look at the geography)
Is there oil? What about minerals?
How strong are this country’s neighbors? Would they put up a fight, as well?
There is no “perfect” country to take over, but you and your partners must determine the best country based on all of the factors above and answer the following on a sheet of paper:
What are the reasons you chose this country? (address all parts of the list above)
What are three problems to consider with the country you chose?
Pick two countries you did not choose and tell the president why they were not chosen.
