Adams Very bitter campaign (personal attacks) Result: Jefferson ties Aaron Burr who was his Vice President candidate Election goes to House of Representatives and they decide Jefferson wins First time power changed from one party to another (It was a success!) 12 th Amendment: Ratified to elect President and Vice President separately

4 Jeffersonian Democracy Jefferson took the oath of office in his everyday clothes at a very subdued ceremony He outlined his goals for his presidency Smaller and weaker Government Power to the “Common man” Focus on farming economy (away from industry) “Let us, then, fellow-citizens, unite with one heart and one mind… Every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle… We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists.”

5 Jeffersonian Change Jefferson brought his strict interpretation to the presidency and made many changes to the Federalist government Shrunk size of government (military and workers) Ended: Alien and Sedition Acts Whiskey Tax (and all other taxes except tariff)

6 Louisiana Purchase Jefferson asked to buy New Orleans from France, Napoleon offered all of Louisiana Jefferson was conflicted: Wanted the land Not given permission in Constitution to buy any land Jefferson decided to purchase Louisiana even though it was not power given in Constitution Doubled the size of the country

8 Lewis and Clark Expedition Jefferson asked Lewis and Clark to explore the new territory Goals: Find Northwest Passage to Pacific Ocean (Used rivers to get West) Take inventory of the land purchased (create maps, plant life, etc.) Establish relationship with Western Indians (Sacagawea) She helped Lewis and Clark navigate and interact with Native American tribes
