1 MATTER

2 What is matter? Anything occupying space and having mass.

3 Substances Have a definite composition All particles are the same
Cannot be separated into different species by physical means

4 Types of Substances Element: A substance that CAN’T be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. Made of just one type of atom.

5 Types of Substances Compound: A substance with a constant composition that CAN be broken down into elements by chemical processes. Made of two or more types of atoms. Compound has properties that are different than the elements it is made from.

6 Examples Elements? Compounds?

7 Mixtures Don’t have a definite composition
Different particles maintain their properties Can be separated into different species by physical means

8 Element, compound, or mixture?
A. mixture compound B. C. element

9 Separation Methods for Mixtures
By physical properties Shape Size Magnetic Filtration Distillation

10 Types of Mixtures Homogeneous Heterogeneous Looks like one thing.
Particles are distributed uniformly. Heterogeneous Different substances are visible. Particles are not distributed uniformly.

11 Relationships of Matter
Granite Vegetable Soup Stainless Steel Milk Sodium Chloride Silver

12 Solids Definite volume Definite shape Particles are close together
Particles vibrate in place; vibrate faster as heat is added Very strong attractions between the particles

13 Liquids Definite volume Take shape of the bottom of their container
Particles are close together Particles able to flow (move around); particles move faster as heat is added Weaker attractions between particles

14 Gases No definite volume; expand to fill available space
Take shape of their entire container Particles are far apart Particles able to flow (move around); particles move faster as heat is added No attractions between particles
