2 Bubonic Plague Struck Asia, North Africa, and Europe in the mid-1300’s Nearly 2/3 of the population of Europe died 20-25 million people in Western Europe 25 million in China, India and other Asian areas Ripped apart society

3 The Black Death Began in Asia Spread on trade routes
Over sea and land! Named for purplish/black spots on the skin High fever, chills, delirium, and DEATH

4 It took 4 years to spread over all of Europe
Spread by fleas on black rats People did not bathe, everyone had fleas and lice! Trash and sewage were thrown into the streets Fleas leapt from person to person in cramped homes and villages. It returned every few years, but not as severely. It continued to lower populations. Video

7 Effects of the Plague Enormous social and economic effects:
Populations fell-some towns/villages lost everyone. Trade declined which made prices rise Serfs left their manors in search of better wages Peasant revolts in England, France, Italy and Belgium Nobles refused to pay higher wages Jews were blamed for the spread of the plague! Churches lost their power and priests abandoned their duties.
