1 Year 9 Core Information Evening
Mathematics Ingrid Kosch – Curriculum Leader Ricky Thorne– Assistant Curriculum Leader

2 In year 9 your child has 4 maths lessons per week
There are 4 sets Sets 1&2 are taught the same content Sets 3&4 are taught the same content All sets follow the same order of topics

3

4 Tests Checkouts every approx 3 weeks on a module
In the first week of the Spring Term (January) on the autumn term’s work (2 papers done in class about 40 min each) In the Summer term (May) – on all work covered in year 9 (2 papers done in class/exam hall, 45 minutes each) Following the May tests we create the GCSE classes for year 10 and start teaching GCSE content after May half term.

5 The GCSE course Takes 2 full years to teach
The harder your child works in year 9, the easier they will find the transition to GCSE. This is because students hindered by poor arithmetic (+ - x ÷) and fraction/percentage skills get stuck there rather than on high level interpretation of exam questions.

6 Resources for students to use at home
Firefly – school VLE on which we have posted the textbook used in classes and the homework exercises. We also post up on Firefly revision material before main tests. MyMaths - an online teaching and revision website up to end of A-level.

7 Two pieces of homework a week
Set from the homework booklet which is on Firefly as a list of pdf files Each exercise should take about 30 min so that’s 1 hour a week (minimum) On occasions other homework such as MyMaths may be set, or a teacher may give out a worksheet. It may be set 2 pieces at the same time, or 1 on a Monday due Wednesday, then Thursday due Monday, for example.
