1 Classifying Matter Review
Unit 2: Topic 1 Notes Classifying Matter Review

2 Scientific Models - A theory or set of theories that try to explain some part of nature are called models. A simple scientific model of matter is the Particle Model.

3 Particle Model of Matter
1. All matter is made up of tiny particles 2. A pure substance has its own kind of particle – different pure substances have different kinds of particles. 3. Particles attract each other. 4. Particle are always moving. 5. The higher the temperature, the faster particles move.

4 Classifying Matter Matter is classified into one of two groups:
1. Pure Substance: Element or compound. These substances are made up of only one kind of particle (eg. Water, oxygen) 2. Mixture: Substance made up of more than one kind of particle. (eg. Salt water, air). Most matter is in this form.

5 Phases of Matter Matter can also be classified into one of three phases: 1. Solid – particles of substance are ‘glued’ together and only vibrate together. 2. Liquid – particles of substance move in a small area, and take the shape of their container. 3. Gas – particles move freely through space.

6 Mixtures Mixtures are classified by whether or not you can see the parts that make it up. Homogeneous Mixture – Mixture where you cannot see the individual parts. The particles are spread out evenly. Heterogeneous Mixture – Mixture where you can clearly see the individual parts. The particles are usually clumped together in larger pieces.

7 Safety in Lab Guidelines
Do not do anything until the teachers tells you to start. Follow all instructions for your experiment. Not is not the time to be creative. Treat all chemicals as though they were toxic and caustic (burns your skin). Handle with care. Know what the WHMIS symbols mean and how to deal with them. Make sure you leave everything the way you found it: clean, put away, etc. Listen to the teacher at all times.
