Psalm 149:1 Praise the LORD! Sing to the LORD a new song, And His praise in the assembly of saints. Hymns Invitation Red Songbook - Supplemental

Genesis 25: The Lesson of Esau
Studying Genesis READING – Genesis 25:19-34 Genesis 25: The Lesson of Esau

The Life of Isaac Genesis 26 – Isaac among the Philistines God speaks to him about the promises The pledge: never to go to Egypt His lie about Rebekah All in all Isaac walked faithfully before God The Jewish tradition is that

AGE 60 – Jacob and Esau born
The Life of Isaac AGE 40 – Marries Rebekah AGE 60 – Jacob and Esau born AGE 75 – Abraham dies AGE 100(?) – Blesses Jacob AGE 180 – Death Since Esau had just married, it may have seemed important to pass the blessing on at that moment. Jewish tradition is that Isaac was 100 when this occurred

Genesis 25:19-34 Esau and Jacob Esau was the Heir to the Promise Esau – “Rough”; Edom – “Red” (Adam) Jacob was the one who wanted the promise Jacob – “Heel catcher” The Jewish tradition is that this trade occurs during the time of Abraham’s death; they would be 15 years old

Genesis 25:19-34 Esau and Jacob Esau – a man of the field (the world) Jacob – a plain man / peace (literally “integrity”)

Genesis 25:19-34 Esau and Jacob In exchanging the birthright: Esau committed a very great evil In that moment God rejected Esau Jacob did not cheat Esau; Esau insulted God

Romans 9:10-13 “Jacob I loved, Esau I hated” Jacob and Esau serve as types: Jacob – those who want the Lord Esau – the physical nation of Israel Isaiah 65:1-2 Romans 10:19-20 Ro 9:10 And not only this, but there was Rebekah also, when she had conceived twins by one man, our father Isaac; 11 for though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that God's purpose according to His choice would stand, not because of works but because of Him who calls, 12 it was said to her, "THE OLDER WILL SERVE THE YOUNGER." 13 Just as it is written, "JACOB I LOVED, BUT ESAU I HATED.“ Isa 65:1 "I permitted Myself to be sought by those who did not ask for Me; I permitted Myself to be found by those who did not seek Me. I said, 'Here am I, here am I,' To a nation which did not call on My name. 2 "I have spread out My hands all day long to a rebellious people, Who walk in the way which is not good, following their own thoughts,

Hebrews 12:14-17 “Godless person Esau” A contrast of: Being the man of peace (“pursue peace”) Sanctification Being the man of the earth (“root springs up”) Defilement Heb 12:14 Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord. 15 See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled; 16 that there be no immoral or godless person like Esau, who sold his own birthright for a single meal. 17 For you know that even afterwards, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought for it with tears.

Hebrews 12:14-17 “Godless person Esau” - Received the blessing of God
- Traded it for a passing worldly morsel Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world John 2:15-16 Heb 12:14 Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord.

Hebrews 12:14-17 “Godless person Esau” Esau is the model of a fallen Christian - Who trades eternal life for a brief pleasure - Who is despised by God for rejecting Him Hebrews 6:4 Hebrews 10:26-27 Heb 6:4 For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame. Heb 10:26 For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a terrifying expectation of judgment and THE FURY OF A FIRE WHICH WILL CONSUME THE ADVERSARIES.

Esau and Jacob The man of the world vs. the man of integrity Jacob emerges as God’s man Esau becomes the type of the “loser” Poor marriage choice – Genesis 26:34 Poor attempts to repair that – Genesis 28:9 Ge 26:34 ¶ When Esau was forty years old he married Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite; 35 and they brought grief to Isaac and Rebekah. Ge 28:8 So Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan displeased his father Isaac; 9 and Esau went to Ishmael, and married, besides the wives that he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael,

Blessings of Isaac nor are they all children because they are Abraham's descendants, but: "THROUGH ISAAC YOUR DESCENDANTS WILL BE NAMED." Romans 9:7
