3 Terms to know Sports Medicine Therapeutic Modality Athletic Training
Branch of healthcare that deals with evaluating athletes and preventing and treating injuries. Athlete has a wide range of definition. Therapeutic Modality Use of heat, cold, or electrical stimulation to produce an increase or decrease in blood flow. Athletic Training Division of sports medicine that deals with the care and prevention of athletic injuries and the management of the training methods used by professional or amateur athletes. Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) Allied health care professional educated and trained in the prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries

Certifying organization for the athletic trainer National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) Not-for-profit organization with more than 27,000 members nationwide that is committed to the advancement, encouragement, and improvement of the athletic training profession Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) Professional member of the sports medicine team who evaluates existing levels of fitness and athleticism, along with helping increase the strength and endurance of an individual or team while promoting a healthier lifestyle. Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) Group health care plan that provides a predetermined, prepaid medical care benefit package

5 TERMS TO KNOW Physical Fitness Program Physical Therapy Aide
A method of exercise designed to prepare an individual to become physically able to do the activities he or she wishes to do in daily life, without causing undue physical stress Physical Therapy Aide Individual who is not licensed but is able to perform clerical tasks under the direct supervision of a physical therapist or physician Physical Therapy Assistant Individual who has earned a 2-year associate's degree and is involved in clinical tasks such as patient care and recording treatments, under the direct supervision of a physical therapist

9 Your turn 1. Choose a career that you are interested in within the realm of sports medicine. 2. Research the requirements for licensure/certification in that profession. For example: bachelors degree vs masters degree, 2 year associate's degree, post grad in a professinal program, etc... 3. Find the average annual salary for someone in that profession. 4. List job settings available to your profession. 5. Share your findings with the class.
