1 Lesson #3 The Ice Age

2 When We Last Met… The Stone Age is broken into 3 parts.
Why is it called the Stone Age? What are ways we can tell early man was developing? What kind of early tools did early man create? What is a society? What are hunter-gatherers? How and why did language develop?

3 Earth: The Perfect Planet
We are the perfect distance from the Sun to provide life. We are 93,000,000 miles from the Sun. The Earth is only 25,000 miles round.

4 Our Incredible Star The sun gives us warmth. If we get closer to the sun, the Earth will be too hot to sustain life. If we get farther from the sun, the Earth will be too cold to sustain life. Our atmosphere protects us as well. During the day it can be as hot as 212 degrees on the moon. At night it goes down as low as 190 degrees BELOW ZERO! There is also no oxygen in space which means no fire.

5 Earth Temperature Records
Highest recorded temperature on Earth: 136° September 13, Aziziya, Libya Highest recorded temperature in Chicago: 107° July 24, 1934 Coldest recorded temperature on Earth: -129° July 21, 1983 – Antarctica/Vostok Station Coldest recorded temperature in Chicago: -27° January 20, 1985

6 Every star you see in the sky is another sun somewhere else!

7 Ice Age Facts An Ice Age is caused by a long term reduction in the Earth’s temperature. There have been 5 different Ice Ages. Lowering temperatures cause ice to form in various places on Earth and since it does not melt, it accumulates. The polar ice sheets grow to cover land that once was uncovered and glaciers form on mountain tops. The last Ice Age began about million years ago. Glaciers were hundreds of feet tall and very heavy. Lake Michigan was made by glaciers in the Ice Age!

8 As Ice sheets form Sea levels go down

9

10 Glaciers are still around today

11 Before the Ice Age America Asia Bering Strait

12 After the Ice Age America Asia Bering Strait Is Gone Forming
A Land Bridge!

13

14 Only 53 Miles separate the two continents at this point!

15

16 Why do you think early man migrated around the world?
Hint: Remember early humans were hunter-gatherers!
