5 Active Reading Practice

Highlight words or phrases that reveal CHARACTER’S PERSPECTIVE OF THE LOTTERY in YELLOW. 12 minutes

6 Partner Work With your partner, complete the directed note-taking chart on page 198 of your purple guidebook. HINT: Use your annotations to support your response. You have 10 minutes to work on this task. 10-15 minutes Guiding Questions to Help Along the Way: What are the most important aspects of the lottery traditions? (Those will be the details you want to discuss.) What text supports that these are the most important aspects? What has changed about the lottery? What text supports that these are changes?

7 As you listen to the remainder of the text, think about the questions below.

How do the concepts of traditions and change relate to social injustice? 12 Minutes Students should understand that this story ends with a stoning which portrays clinging to tradition in a negative light. 8 Homework Now that you have finished the text, go back and revise your writing from yesterday’s lesson on page 197 of your purple guide book. Try to pay attention to sentence structure and use some different sentence types that you may not have tried before. You MUST write at lease 4-5 sentences. Your work will be due (along with your chart on page 198) when you come to class tomorrow! The remainder of the class period
