AR Guide

Students have two AR goals:
Individual Goal Superhero Goal Both goals require a certain number of points AND 85% or higher comprehension.

Points You get points when you take, and pass, tests on the books you read. Different books have different point values! Some books are only worth .5 (half a point); some are worth MUCH more!

Comprehension Your comprehension is an average of what you make on all of your AR tests. Low grades on AR tests will bring your comprehension average down! That is why you should always make sure you have fully read and understand your books before you take a test!

Superhero Goals These goals are set by Mrs. Williams and are for the entire grade level: 3rd grade goal is 15 points 4th grade goal is 20 points 5th grade goal is 30 points 6th grade goal is 40 points This goal is probably higher than your individual AR goal!

How do you get so many points?
Read books that are worth more points!! When you are selecting books to check out, make sure they are in your ZPD, so you will be able to read them without many problems, and see how many points they are worth! It will be very hard to meet your superhero club goal by reading small, half point books!

Your ZPD Your ZPD is the range of reading levels in which you can expect to be successful (you should be able to read most of the words and understand what the book is about) You will not be able to test lower than your ZPD. If the lower end of your ZPD is a 3.5, you cannot take a test on a 2.9 book. Choose books within your reading range for the best success in AR.

How to be Successful! Choose books in YOUR ZPD. Don’t worry about what your friends are reading! Read the books carefully, and make sure you have read the entire book before taking a test. Do not take a test just because you have seen the movie! Take your time on the test. If your goal is higher, choose books that have greater point values to meet your goal quicker. (It may take a week to read a chapter book, but you will get more points than reading short books!)
