Rome begins to decline Rome’s Economy Weakens- Several Factors Hostile tribes disrupted trade Lacked new sources of gold and silver Minting additional coins led to drop in value of coins (Inflation) Food shortages and spread of disease Military and Political Turmoil Roman soldiers become less discipline and loyal Gave no allegiance to Rome Conditions caused citizens to lose patriotism 2

Rome survived intact for 200 years 284 CE- Diocletian becomes emperor Thought empire grew too large and complex Divided empire into the Greek East and Latin West Civil War broke out Young commander (Constantine) takes over 330-Moved capital from Rome to Greek city of Byzantium Center of power shifted from Rome to East City’s new name was Constantinople (Turkey) After Constantine’s death, empire would divide East survived, the West fell 3
