Two Types of Historical Context Historical Situation of an event What is the larger regional, national, or global situation that this is leading to the event or surrounding/impacting this event or person?

Time Period: Event or person being analyzed/discussed: Aspect of life during this time period Influence on the Subject (event or person)

5 Historical Context of a document – ask the following to understand the document you are analyzing
When was it produced and how might the timing relate to other events? What were the existing beliefs and norms that might have influenced the purpose and creation of this document? What other groups were around and how might that shape your understanding of the document? Wheat is the genre of the source? How might this shape its content and viewpoint? Historical Document Who produced the source and what influenced them to do so? How might political, social, religious, or economic events occurring at the same time have influence the production of the source? What were the relationships between the groups (cultural, social, economic, political) What was the political structure and how might that have influenced the creation of the document? How might common beliefs or trends during this time period have influenced the production of the source?
