A Heathy Dating Relationship Looks Like … Small Group Discussion What is dating? How old were you when you entered into your first dating relationship? How would adults at the time have characterized your relationship? content/uploads/ /10Tips_healthyrelationships2.pdf Introduce this brief small group exercise about how we define dating and healthy relationships and how it is important for us to remember what it was like to be a teenager. After approximately 5-7 minutes of discussion, I will ask tables to share some of the key points of their discussions. Using a post-it easel pad and marker to scribe, I will write down some of the participant responses. If not brought up in discussion provide the following facts that may merit sharing: A 2012 study of middle school students found that 75% of seventh graders have had a boyfriend or a girlfriend at some point. Dating is defined as: Two (or possibly more than two) people in an intimate relationship. The relationship may be sexual, but does not have to be. The relationship may be serious or casual, committed or open, short-term or long-term. Signs of a healthy relationship can include: Giving each other space to hang out with friends and family Being okay with disagreement Respecting physical boundaries Remaining in control of personal choices Exhibiting healthy texting behavior (not excessive or abusive) The issue of jealousy and monitoring can be seen as a sign of love and caring by the youth Finally I will share “10 Tips on Talking About Healthy Relationships with Teens” developed by RESPECT campaign and FUTURES without Violence Transition to or completed with Legal Momentum
