1 Why do the Effects of Natural Disasters Vary
Why do the Effects of Natural Disasters Vary? Identify why natural disasters effects vary from country to country. I can identify the risk factors that contribute to the severity of a natural disaster. Best Guess 1. What is the difference between a natural hazard and Natural Disaster? 2. Define a global issue. Not an example 1 1

2 Big Question Why might earthquakes of similar strength have different results in two different countries. 2

3 Whether an earthquake or a tsunami, a hurricane or a flood, the risk that a natural event will develop into a disaster depends only partially on the strength of the event itself. A substantial cause lies in the living conditions of people in the affected regions and the opportunities to quickly respond and help. Those who are prepared and who know what to do during an extreme natural event have higher survival chances. --World Risk Report 2011. 3

4 What is meant by the term ‘living conditions?’
Why is the strength of a natural hazard not the only factor that determines the effects of the natural disaster it causes? What is meant by the term ‘living conditions?’ Based on this quotation, what types of countries are likely to suffer more in natural disasters? Can you identify any countries specifically? 4

5 Indicators of Risk Natural Disasters:
World Risk Report September 5 5

6 EXPOSURE How likely is it that an extreme natural event/hazard will occur? what factors influence the degree to which a country is exposed to natural hazards 6 6

7 Factors that determines EXPOSURE Risks Location and geographic features of an area.
Example of High risk of Exposure…. For Volcanos would be a country that has a lot of volcanos or a city located on a volcano. Can you change Exposure Risk? 7 7

8 Central America and Southeast Asia.
What is one country at high risk for natural hazards? What is one region at high risk for natural hazards? 8 Central America and Southeast Asia. 8

9 SUSCEPTIBILITY What is the likelihood that a natural
Hazard will result in harm and damages? If a natural Hazard results in harm what does it become? Some people are more susceptible to colds than others. Some types of houses are more susceptible to fire than others. what factors impact the degree to which a country is susceptible to natural hazards 9 9

10 Factors that determines SUSCEPTIBILITY public infrastructure, housing conditions, nutrition and the general economic framework of a country. 10 10

11 West Africa and East Africa. 11
What is one country that ranks very high in susceptibility? . What is one region that ranks very high in susceptibility? West Africa and East Africa. 11 11

12 COPING CAPABILITIES To what extent are societies able to cope with severe and immediate disasters? How good a country can deal with a disaster 12 12

13 Factors that determine COPING CAPABILITIES government, disaster preparedness and early warning, medical services, social and economic security. Good Coping Capabilities= Low risk of damages 13 13

14 What is one country that ranks very high in lack of coping capacities?
What is one region that ranks very high in lack of coping capacities? 14 14

15 ADAPTIVE CAPACITIES Does the society take precautionary measures against anticipated future natural hazards? 15 15

16 Factors that Determine ADAPTIVE CAPACITIES education and research, environmental status, ecosystem protection, and investments. 16 16

. What is one country that ranks very high in lack of adaptive capacities? What is one region that ranks very high in lack of adaptive capacities? 17 17

18 VULNERABILITY the sum of exposure, susceptibility, coping capacities, and adaptive capacities. High Vulnerability = World Risk Report September 18 18

19 World Risk Report 2011. 9 September 2012. http://www. ehs. unu
What are some countries and regions of the world that are most vulnerable to natural disasters? 19 19
