1 Take out your LG calendar
Good Morning Take out your LG calendar

2 LG: I will begin to understand the trends on the Periodic Table
Write your LG 08/30/13 LG: I will begin to understand the trends on the Periodic Table

3 Take out a Piece of Paper for notes

4 Introduction to the Periodic Table

5 What does PERIODIC TABLE mean?
Periodic-organized, based on time, repetitive Table- Chart Ex: the Periodic Table is a Calendar of the elements.

6 What is the PERIODIC TABLE?
Shows all known elements in the universe. Organizes the elements by chemical properties.

7 How do you read the PERIODIC TABLE?

8 Why do we have the Periodic Table?
Year Who? What? 1789 LeVoisier Grouped atoms by similar properties 1803 Dalton Said all matter is made of atoms (which are Elements) 1863 Newlands Arranged the elements by mass (protons + neutrons) 1869 Mendeleeve Made a new way to arrange elements; he left space for undiscovered atoms/elements 1884 Arranged elements into Periods This was in your reading from last week; you did a dialectical journal with the sub

9 How is the Periodic Table organized?
The elements are sorted by their PROPERTIES (characteristics)

10 Groups on the Periodic Table
These are the VERTICLE columns (up & down) Groups are numbered 1-18 Each group has: Same number of electrons available for bonding (helpful in making MOLECULES)

11 Periods on the Periodic Table
These are the HORIZONTAL rows (side to side) Period numbered 1-7 The Period Number is the same as the number of electron rings

12 Types of Elements Metals Nonmetals
Solid at room temperature Conduct heat and electricity Example: Silver (Ag), Iron (Fe) Nonmetals Gas at room temperature Does not conduct heat and electricity Example: Helium (He), Oxygen (O) Metalloids (also called Semi-metals) Can act as both Metals and Nonmetals

13 What is an Element? It is a group of the same kind of atom?

14 Take out your Blank Periodic Table
If you were absent last class, I left one for you

15 We are going to label the different parts
You need a pen/pencil and a colored pencil/highlighter

16 Label each as I labeled mine

17 Group 1: Alkali Metals (does not include Hydrogen (H))

18 Group 2: Alkaline Earth Metals

19 Transition Metals

20 Rare Earth Metals

21 Nobel Gases

22 Group 17: Halogens

23 Metalloids

24 Atomic Number 1 (Lowest Atomic Number)

25 Highest Atomic Number

26 Periods 1-7

27 Electron Rings 1-7

28 Groups 1-18

29 Yours should look like this:

30 Now get out 3 Colored pencils
Any color

31 And your double sided periodic table
The Big One

32 Write Metals, Metalloids and Nonmetals at the bottom
Pick a color for each and color over it

33 Take your Metal Color and Color in the metals.
Be careful around the zig zag line on the right side of the periodic table Do not color Hydrogen Al, Ga, Sn, Bi are the last of the metals Remember the Rare Earth Metals The next slide has my example…please click

34

35 Now the Metalloids

36 Color the Nonmetals (this includes Hydrogen)

37 Yours should look like this:

38 What do you think? On a piece of paper and using both periodic tables we just did 1. What are the different patterns you notice? 2. What are some things you find interesting? 3. What are some things you find confusing? 4. What are some questions you have?

39 Please give your answers to the questions to the sub
