Avant WorldSpeak WorldSpeak measures the speaking and writing proficiency levels of so-called Less Commonly Taught Languages, or LCTLs. Students begin with a self-assessment based on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) CanDo statements. The test starts with a Student Profile page and then a self- evaluation. The test will then flow in the following order: Writing then Speaking. The test will provide helpful instructions at the beginning of each section. Please read the instructions carefully. Based on their score students are given four Speaking and four Writing prompts with three prompts delivered at the self-assessed level and one prompt delivered at a level above the self- assessed level. Responses are scored by trained and certified raters who are members of the language community.
3
What is Avant STAMP 4S? STAndards-based Measurement of Proficiency
4s: 4 skills- Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking Determines language proficiency in 4 domains (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking,) for grades 7-16 Web-based and computer-adaptive, with real-world questions on topics selected to be level- appropriate based on research into topics taught at each level The questions engage learners, and because Avant STAMP 4S is adaptive, students are able to demonstrate their own actual proficiency level without any pre-set upper limits
4
Time to complete per domain
Reading: minutes Writing: minutes (WorldSpeak will take longer) Listening: minutes Speaking: minutes (WorldSpeak will take longer)

Avant Score Results Reading and Listening scores are available as soon as the test taker completes each section. Be sure to refresh the page for updates. Writing and Speaking scores are typically available in 5 to 7 business days. Scores may be available sooner, so be sure to check the test results screen periodically to determine the grading progress.

Technology Be sure to do the Technology Check to make sure your system in properly configured: Network Requirements: Bandwidth: 200 Kbps of available bandwidth per test taker is recommended Required Equipment: PC, Mac, Chromebook, headset with microphone, keyboard and mouse. The browser must be given permission to use the microphone on the active Avant product pages. The selected browser must be set to allow cookies AND JavaScript Ensure that computers are not affected by power saving, screen saver, or shutdown processes that may affect test taking Activate the appropriate languages for testing in the corresponding language assessments (Arabic, Chinese or Japanese)
8
Test Security Ensure test content remains secure
Do not leave materials or computer screens unattended before or after testing Cover any bulletin boards with any materials that would assist a student Ensure that no specific information about the content of the test is shared with students or their families prior to or after testing Keep personal login information secure Do not duplicate any test materials If you have witnessed, been informed of or suspect a Test Security Incident, please report it to your Test Coordinator or School Administration
9
Before Testing The Avant Assessments must be taken in a proctored environment, with a Test Administrator who is authorized by the School to administrate the test No paper, pens, pencils, cell phones, etc. are allowed in the testing area No additional applications (e.g., Word, , chat) or browser windows are allowed to be open during testing Avant graders review all written and spoken responses and any inappropriate responses (vulgar, violent, etc.) will not be scored and will be reported to your Test Administrator
10
Before Testing (cont.) Have the Test Codes and Passwords ready (For each testing group there will be a Student Test Code and Password, and a Teacher Test Code and Password.) Where appropriate, have a list of authorized test takers and/or ask test takers to provide photo ID Have students’ ID numbers available, if they are being used for the required Student ID field on the Student Profile (if not, be prepared to advise students on what to enter) When testing in a character-based language, provide test takers with instructions for selecting the input language. For more information, see the Writing Input Guide. Inform test takers how much time is allowed for this testing session Direct test takers to read the instructions in each section of the test carefully Have a printout of the Proctoring Guide for both Assessments handy Read the Test Taker Guide for both Assessments and decide if any of the information should be shared with test takers (show Avant website)
11
To Start Testing The Test Administrator should provide test takers with the information below. The information can be written on a whiteboard/blackboard, projected on a screen, or given verbally, but we do not recommend distributing to test takers on slips of paper. The address for the Test website (app.avantassessment.com) The testing group’s Test Code The testing group’s Password Instruct test takers to click on start a new test Guidance for filling in the Login Name field: Login Name for each test taker will be their unique test code and password given by their Test Administrator Be sure students remember how you entered their Login Name EXACTLY because if they need to resume the test, they will need to use the same Login Name they started the test with previously Instructions for filling in the Student ID field on the Student Profile : Refer to the student Profile Guide found on the AVANT Website Which test section to start first? You will need to complete Reading before you an start the Writing and/or complete the Listening before you can start Speaking. Please note, if bandwidth is limited, you may want to have half of the test takers start with Reading/Writing and the other half with Listening/Speaking (this can also help reduce the noise level) Give instructions for stopping the test at a certain point or directions to continue until the test is complete
12
During the Assessment The Test Administrator must remain in the testing area throughout testing. Circulate while the testing is taking place to ensure that no paper, pens, pencils, cell phones, etc. are being used. Make sure that no additional windows or applications (such as Word, or web browsers) are open or launched during testing. Make sure that no dictionaries, textbooks or other support materials are being used. Any infractions to the above regulations are to result in the immediate logging out of the individual test taker’s test by the Test Administrator (by closing the browser), and the suspension of testing for that individual test taker. Such incidents shall be reported to the Testing Coordinator. As a Test Coordinator, you can assist test takers with logging in, answering their profile questions, selecting the Writing input language (if testing in Arabic, Chinese or Japanese), proper use of their headsets, computer issues, and resuming a test. Please circulate among the test takers to ensure they are following instructions and progressing smoothly. If there is a time limit for the session, provide occasional reminders of the time remaining and make sure test takers are on track to complete the test in the allotted time.
13
During the Assessment (cont.)
During the Speaking section, make sure test takers are recording successfully. You can also use the Teacher Login to monitor the progress of test taking, such as who has finished and who still needs to work on another section of the test. Do not help with anything that is related to the content of the test items. If a test taker needs to resume the test due to lost connection (or any other reason), the login information will need to be entered exactly as originally entered. Instruct test takers to click on Continue Test after re-entering the test code and password. Avant STAMP 4S should resume from the point at which the test taker left off. If necessary, the teacher or proctor can use the Teacher Login to look up the test taker's Login Name. Please login to the Teacher Report Page to monitor test taker logins to ensure that students have completed the test and that they have not created unnecessary duplicate test logins.
14
After Testing After testing is completed, the test proctor or test coordinator may log in to the Avant STAMP 4S and WorldSpeak test reporting website (app.avantassessment.com) to view test results for Reading and Listening items. Writing and Speaking scores are typically available within 5 to 7 business days after test completion. They may be available sooner, so check the test results screen periodically to determine the grading progress. After scoring is complete, the proctor or test coordinator may print individual test taker reports or download an Excel file of test results. Do not allow the test takers to access the teacher report page or see other test taker scores.

NOTE TO PRESENTER The Practice test does not require a code, but the actual test does require a code. If you are going to send the audience a login, remind them that you will send that shortly after the training. TALKING POINTS Your full name will appear on the report, and if you complete the test at different times, then make sure to use the exact same spelling of your name

This is the first page of the data/report that the teachers have access to. The reading and the listening scores are available right away, while the writing and speaking scores will take 3-5 days to complete. And post to they system. The top section shows charts that give an overview of score ranges for this particular test group and shows the distributions of scores across all of the levels for each domain, reading, writing, listening and speaking. The section below the summary charts outlines the scores for each test taker in the group and shows the individual scores for each student. The data included here includes the score for each domain, the test date the amount of time spent in the test and then includes a link (view) to the individual report that can be printed for each test taker. Notice at the bottom of the page, the links available to the teacher. These links include access to downloadable excel files for the summary and individual data elements for this class. There is also a link that can be used to generate a batch print report of all of the test takers for this group. (I generally speak here about the importance of doing Action Research with this data. We want to challenge the teachers to look at their classes and instruction in different ways.)

This is the individual report page for each test taker
This is the individual report page for each test taker. This can be printed and given to the student or parents. This report included some basic narrative that describes the general ability of the test taker with each of the domains. The Writing and Speaking sections also include links to the actual student responses (shown on the next screen) This allows the teacher to drill into the student responses and see what they actually created. The use of the inverted pyramid is important to communicate the idea of language proficiency and where the student is at on this journey to acquire fluency. Again, these reports can be generated for the entire group by clicking on the Batch Print Command on the bottom of the previous page.
