2. Today’s Goal: Read and analyze a personal narrative titled “Storm,” an excerpt from the autobiography Woodsong, by award-winning author Gary Paulsen (see online PDF).
Outcomes:
Define the term “excerpt.”
Define the term “personal narrative” and identify the genre it represents.
Distinguish between a biography and an autobiography.
Define the term “anecdote” and identify anecdotal pieces of information in “Storm.”
Analyze how the author uses anecdotes to reveal the personality of a dog.
Identify the author’s main idea in the personal narrative “Storm.”

3. Starter #1:
How many of you can recall reading the book Hatchet? One reason why Gary Paulsen’s books are so popular is because he recreates stories in a way that makes us feel like what we are reading really is happening. That means his writing is “credible,” believable. Can you guess why his suspenseful outdoors adventures are so believable?
Paulsen writes about things he loves, things he has experienced. He can write a tale of survival in the wilderness because he has spent so much time living in the wilderness. Today’s story is an excerpt from a book (Woodsong), and we could call this piece a “personal narrative.” What do we mean by that?
A personal narrative is a true account, told from a first person viewpoint. Please open your Chrome book and call up the PDF titled “Storm.” Then see if you can guess the topic of this true story. 
