5 Cardiovascular System
Transportation of oxygen, nutrients, cell wastes, hormones = body homeostasis Made up of the Blood Heart Blood Vessels Heart provides the force to move blood

6 The Heart Approx. size of closed fist Flanked by the lungs
Lies between the sternum and vertebral column (CPR) Rests of diaphragm Middle left of thoracic cavity Apex points downward left; base (broad part of heart) Inside pericardium

8 Heart Disease in the U.S.

10 Chamber of the Heart Atria = receiving chambers
Ventricles = pumps out blood Blood flows from body  atria  ventricles  to body (2 circuits)

11 Chambers of the Heart 2 Atria 2 ventricles

12 Right Atrium Recieves blood from superior and inferior vena cava
Blood passes through tricuspid valve to get to right ventricle ?v=ruM4Xxhx32U

13 Right Ventricle Tricuspid valve connected by chordae tendinae and then to papillary muscles Interventricular septum separates ventricles Blood goes through pulmonary valve into the pulmonary trunkwhich splits into right and left pulmonary arteries

14 Left Atrium Receives blood from lungs through 4 pulmonary veins
Blood flows through bicuspid valve into left ventricle

15 Left Ventricle Chordae tendinae anchored by papillary muscles (of bicuspid valve) Blood passes through aortic valve into ascending aorta, then arch, and descending aorta Muscular wall MUCH thicker because it has to pump the same amount of blood FARTHER distance
