COURSE LEVELS Standard Career Prep College Preparatory Honors
A Standard course is one which emphasizes Ohio’s Learning Standards and Model Curriculum. Standard courses rely heavily on in-class learning experiences; therefore, good classroom attendance and a positive work ethic are expected. College Preparatory College Preparatory course covers Ohio’s Learning Standards and Model Curriculum at a faster pace. A student who wishes to attend a four- year college or university should strive to take courses at the college preparatory level, when appropriate, as these classes follow a curriculum that prepares the student for college. Honors An Honors course covers Ohio’s Learning Standards and Model Curriculum, and is one that is enriched in rigor and offers acceleration beyond the typical high school college preparatory course. Honors courses require greater expectation of classroom participation, more in-depth coverage of the curriculum, and additional responsibilities placed on the student. These courses will often move at a faster pace. Honors courses receive a 5% weight. Advanced Placement (AP) The Advanced Placement Program, sponsored by the College Board, is a set of college-level courses taught by high school teachers. The course content/syllabus is approved by the College Board to provide the academic rigor and challenge of a freshman college course. The workload in these classes is much more rigorous than other classes at the high school level. At the end of the course, the student has the opportunity to take the AP exam in May. A qualifying AP exam score may allow the student to earn college credit. A student who is successful in an AP course has a strong interest in the subject-area, is a self-motivated learner, and is effective at time management, task planning and self-advocacy. AP courses receive a 10% weight.

GIFTED LETTER
16
CHOOSING COURSE LEVEL What if student is not identified gifted in the subject area? Has student met the prerequisite for the class? Example: No gifted ID in math, but has already completed Honors Algebra II…The next class is Honors Precalculus. Example: Currently taking CP Physical Science and has >90% semester average…Student may request Honors Biology. Override Parents may override grade prerequisites but may not override course prerequisites. Example: Honors Precalculus- Prerequisite : 75% in Honors Algebra II or 90% in CP Algebra II or Gifted ID. Student could override the 75% or 90% grade prerequisite, as long as the student has taken the appropriate course (Honors or CP Algebra II). Student could not override the course prerequisite of Honors or CP Algebra II to take Honors Precalculus. (Student must take Honors or CP Algebra II before taking Honors Precalculus.)
