3 Coercive Acts To punish the colonists in Boston and warn others against acting out, Parliament passed the Coercive Acts The colonists found them so horrible they called them the Intolerable Acts

5 Intolerable Acts The Intolerable Acts enraged people all over the colonies Colonists immediately sent food and money to Boston Colonists met together to decide on a plan of action September 1774: delegates from all colonies (except Georgia) met in Philadelphia

6 The First Continental Congress
During this meeting (The First Continental Congress) colonists decided to: Ban ALL trade with Britain until the Intolerable Acts were repealed Begin training troops for defense of the colonies **Georgia agreed to be a part of the actions of the congress

7 Parliament & Colonists React
Although boycotting British goods had worked in the past, Parliament refused to repeal the Intolerable Acts Instead, Parliament increased trade restrictions and sent more troops to the colonies Colonial troops continued to train Most colonists believed a battle would make the British back down War was not expected at this time
