1 Warm Up 10/17 What did you gain from yesterday’s cumulative review activities? Create a bulleted list of at least 2-3 items

2 Learning Targets Today I can begin to brainstorm and outline my response to a chosen prompt on our study Invisible Man.

3 Writing Assignment Open the assignment sheet in Google Classroom, and let’s explore this assignment together.

4 Moving Away from the Five Paragraph Essay
----> A good piece of writing takes its reader on a "journey."

5 Ways to Organize Body Paragraphs
Chronological (time) Spatial order (location) Causal order (organized by how things work) Simple to complex Narrow to wider implications Obvious to surprising

6 Choose a Prompt Figure out what prompt you want to answer, and what you want to say about it. Your response does not need to be neat and clean at this point. Choose a structure that works best for the essay you want to write.

7 Outline Format – Look for a clearer one on Google Classroom
Introduction (label which organization format you chose) – Write out a rough idea that you might want to use based on one of these strategies: make a connection to the readers appeal to them anticipate their needs orient them in the direction of the "journey” your main focus within your topic (thesis) Body Paragraphs (do this for each of the four/five) – Topic idea Context Quotation Commentary: Pull out discrete words, phrases, etc. which illustrate the conclusion you’ve drawn. Then, connect the dots for the reader and prove your assertion/conclusion valid. Conclusion – Write out a rough idea that you may use based on one of these strategies: mark the destination of the journey provide a reflection Close your idea, but make sure this paragraph is still "meaty"
