1 Kick-off: Monday, March 14 th 2016  Welcome to Week 27 (36 Weeks!)  7 Weeks until AP English Literature & Composition Exam May 4 th, 2016 8:00 am It’s a composition week! Read through the Pivotal Moment Literary Analysis assignment. Then – find your red folder (if you’ve still got it)

2 Pivotal Moment Literary Analysis  SPECIFICS:  Your final paper will be no more than three pages in length, typed, Times New Roman, double-spaced  You will have time in class to work on it and receive support from your peers and me.  You will need to upload this to Turnitin.com.  The rubric is attached; this is to give you guidance if you struggle with certain sections, but this is simply a much more detailed version of the AP rubric.

3 Pivotal Moment Literary Analysis  TIMELINE:  Prompt Deconstruction, Theme & Thesis due Monday, March 14 th EOC  Outline due Wednesday, March 16 th EOC  First draft, typed as a Google doc ready to share with peers, due Thursday, March 16 th BOC  Feedback from Peers on Thursday, March 17 th in-class  Revision time Friday, March 18 th in-class  FINAL, revised draft due Monday, March 21 st 8:00 am to turnitin.com

4 GOALS  Everyone will earn at least a 6-7 on this literary analysis  We gain slow, in-depth practice with Question 3 of the AP Exam.  We avoid plot summary in this essay.  We answer the complex prompt fully with our thesis.  We provide well-focused, persuasive, sophisticated analysis of Invisible Man.  We demonstrate an effective and confident control of language.

8 End of Class Goals/Homework  Draft a thesis statement (consider including a theme statement) by the end of class.  Draft a few versions of your thesis statement.  Ask your shoulder partner to review your thesis statement – have you fully answered the prompt?

9 Exit Ticket -  Write down the name of 2-3 people you would like to work in a group with for AP Prep, starting this week.  These should not just be your friends- they should be individuals you know will push you to your highest level and hold you to soaring expectations!

13 Homework  Your first draft of your Pivotal Moment Literary Analysis is due BEGINNING of CLASS Thursday (as a Google doc, ready for editing!)  Start outlining/drafting, referring to our class resources  You will have time in class on Wednesday, but only Wednesday.

14 Kick-off: Wednesday, March 16 th 2016  Considerations for outlining & drafting: Use specific references and details from the work Use connections and transitions between main ideas Refer to the idea of your thesis and be sure to connect the details from the work to your thesis. Avoid mere plot summary. You must retell enough of the story in order to make your points, but in your commentary sentences, you must come back to the idea of the prompt. Continue to reminder your reader of your thesis statement. Every detail you choose to include in your essay must have a reason for being there- to support your thesis. Conclusions to the Open Questions are important. You will need to give the essay a feeling of finality. The conclusion is your last chance to demonstrate your knowledge of the meaning of the work as a whole and the “big picture” about human nature or society that is revealed.

17 Kick-off: Thursday, March 17 th 2016  Get into AP Group Formations.  Get Chromebooks for all group members.  Open up your Pivotal Moment first draft

18 (10) Essay revising workshop: Step 1: Highlight your work Highlight your thesis in GREEN (can be more than one sentence). Highlight your theme in PURPLE. Highlight your evidence in BLUE. Highlight your commentary in YELLOW.

19 (30) Feedback Plan 1. (15) Give feedback to EVERY person in your group. This should be in the form of “comments”. Do not edit anything for them. ***You should write at least two comments on every paragraph.

20 (30) Feedback Focus for Feedback:  Content First:  Review the question: Does it make sense? Is it specific? Does it analyze a literary technique?  Ensure that all five sentences are included.  Check– does it make sense? Is it specific? Is it focused on the passage (or does the response include other “fluffy” information or irrelevant details from the rest of the novel)?  Grammar Second:  Check that it’s grammatically correct – it needs to make sense!  Check for active voice (less helping verbs) and present tense.

21 ( 35) Workshops: College feedback discussions 1. You will choose a peer to go first; everyone should pull up that peer’s essay – no one should be working on anything else. 2. (2 min) From there, you should all read the essay in its entirety in silence for two minutes. 3. (3 min) Then, you should make at least TWO comments silently for the next three minutes. Your main focus is CONTENT – is the thesis strong? Is there relevant evidence and commentary? *We can focus on grammar secondary unless the essay does not make any sense. 4. (2 min) Finally, you will discuss as a group the strengths and weaknesses of the essay for two minutes, focusing on how this person will take their essay to the next level.

22 Homework Continue giving feedback to group members (if your group wants to!) Start revising

23 Kick-off: Friday, March 18 th 2016  Personal Revisions:  Highlight EVERY verb of analysis (emphasizes, uses, conveys, demonstrates, shows).  Change these verbs from your Golden Folder.  Check how you start every sentence – is it the same? Are your sentences interesting to read?  Make sure you use at least three complex sentences – this can include sentences with a dash, semicolon, colon, or even conjunction (FANBOY). Mix it up.

24 Next steps: Due Monday, 3/21 on turnitin.com  Revise your own essay based on feedback! You can also comment on others’ essays to give them support.  You are responsible for ensuring that your essay meets the minimum benchmark.  Your final essay is due Monday, 3/21 by 8 am on turnitin.com.
