2. asthenosphere
Semi-solid layer below the lithosphere; part of the upper mantle

3. continental drift       
The idea that continents were once part of a giant land mass

4. core
This deepest layer is at the center of Earth. The innermost layer of Earth.

5. crust
The solid, outermost layer of Earth

6. geologist
A scientist who studies the earth.

7. igneous rock
They form from magma that cools below the earth's surface or lava that hardens above the earth's surface.

8. lithosphere
The seismic active region of earth, including the crust and upper mantle; this layer of the earth is approximately 62 miles thick

9. mantle  
The layer of Earth, under the crust, in which plate movement is generated .

10. mesosphere
The part of the Earth's mantle below the lithosphere and the asthenosphere, but above the outer core. 

11. metamorphic rock
Rock that has been changed by heat and pressure.

12. sedimentary rock  
A type of rock that forms when particles from other rocks or the remains of plants and animals are pressed and cemented together.

13. tectonic plate
huge rocky plates that make up the Earth's surface

14. Relative position
location of an object as described in relation to a reference point (ex: you are standing to the left of the teacher's desk)

15. composition
Something that is created by arranging several things to form a whole, a chemical makeup of an object.

16. density
How heavy an object is relative to its size; the ratio of mass to volume.

17. Continental plates
one of the large pieces of the surface of the earth that move separately.

18. Oceanic plates
 part of the crustal plate under the oceans; made mostly of mafic or basaltic rock.

19. Geologic time
Time span studied by geologists (scientists) looking at rock layers (the deeper the layer, the older the fossil).
