In a criminal case, a court determines whether a person accused of breaking the law is guilty or not guilty of a misdemeanor or a felony.

What are the two types of criminal cases?
misdemeanors and felonies

Procedure for a Criminal Case
A person accused of a crime may be arrested if the police have probable cause.

Second Accused may be committed to jail or released on bail.

Third Arraignment probable cause is reviewed attorney may be appointed
plea is entered

Fourth Court date is set and a trial is conducted

Ruling Jury finds defendant not guilty of a crime
Jury convicts defendant of crime May be appealed to the Virginia Court of Appeals or (possibly to the) Virginia Supreme Court

Police arrest the subject Suspect appears before a judge and may be committed to jail or released on bail Arraignment probable cause is reviewed attorney may be appointed plea is entered Court date is set and a trial is conducted Ruling Not guilty Guilty May be appealed
